1.1 The Role of Isometrics in Code Compliance
An isometric drawing is not merely a drafting exercise—it is a compliance tool. For the Delaware Master Plumber exam, you must read an isometric as a legal document that demonstrates whether a proposed installation meets the 2018 IPC. The code requires that “plans, specifications, and other data” be submitted for review (IPC Chapter 1, Section 106). While the code does not mandate a specific drawing format, the isometric is the industry standard for showing the three-dimensional relationship of drain, waste, and vent (DWV) piping.
On an exam, you will be given a plan view and an isometric. Your job is to identify violations. The most common violations are not in the pipe sizing—they are in the geometry: vent offsets, trap arm lengths, and fixture connection points.
Key principle: The isometric shows direction and elevation. A pipe drawn at 45° in the plan may be a horizontal run, a vertical drop, or a 45° offset. The isometric resolves this ambiguity. You must verify that every horizontal drain has a slope of ¼ inch per foot (IPC Chapter 9, Section 905.1) unless otherwise approved, and that every vent rises vertically or is properly graded.
1.2 Line Types and Symbol Conventions
While the IPC does not publish a symbol standard, the exam assumes you know the common conventions used in code-compliant shop drawings.
Fixture symbols are standardized: a toilet is an oval, a sink is a rectangle with a small circle for the trap, a floor drain is a square with an “X” inside. You must also recognize the symbol for a cleanout (a circle with a dot or a square with a “CO” label) and a vent terminal (a small circle at the roof line).
Exam trap: Do not confuse a cleanout symbol with a floor drain symbol. A cleanout is required at the base of every vertical stack (IPC Section 906.1) and at every change in direction greater than 45° in a horizontal run. A floor drain is a fixture that requires a trap and a vent.
1.3 The Relationship Between Plan and Isometric
A floor plan is a horizontal slice at a given elevation (typically 4 feet above the finished floor). It shows horizontal runs but not vertical drops. The isometric adds the Z-axis.

Field point: As the master plumber, you are responsible for verifying that the isometric matches the actual field conditions. A common error is a vent that connects to the drain downstream of the trap—this creates a siphon. The isometric must show the vent connecting between the trap and the stack, never on the fixture side of the trap.
1.4 Fixture Unit Loads and Pipe Sizing from Drawings
The isometric is the basis for pipe sizing. You must count fixture units (FU) from the drawing and apply the appropriate tables.
Exam trap: The isometric may show a 2-inch vent serving a 3-inch drain. That is allowed only if the vent’s developed length is within the table’s limits. For example, a 2-inch vent with a developed length of 30 feet can serve up to 8 FU. If the drawing shows a 2-inch vent serving 10 FU over 30 feet, it is a violation.
Calculation example: A bathroom group (tank water closet, lavatory, shower) = 3 + 1 + 2 = 6 FU. If the isometric shows a 2-inch horizontal branch carrying this group to a stack, the branch is adequate (6 FU ≤ 6 FU per Table 710.1(1)). However, if a second bathroom group is added to the same 2-inch branch, the total is 12 FU—exceeding the 6 FU limit. The branch must be increased to 3 inches.
1.5 Vent Termination and Clearance Requirements
The isometric must show the vent terminal penetrating the roof. The code requires:
Field point: On a flat roof with a parapet, the vent must extend above the parapet if the parapet is within 10 feet. The isometric should show this dimension. A common exam trap is a vent drawn at 6 inches above the roof but located within 10 feet of a window—this is a violation unless the vent is 2 feet above the window sill.
Vent offsets: A vent may offset horizontally only after rising 6 inches above the flood level rim of the highest fixture served (IPC Section 905.2). The isometric must show this vertical rise before any 45° or 90° bend. If the drawing shows a vent taking off horizontally immediately from the drain, it is a violation.
1.6 Trap Requirements and the Trap Arm
Every fixture must have a trap (IPC Section 1002.1), except those with integral traps (e.g., water closets). The isometric must show the trap and its connection to the drain.
Exam trap: A 1½-inch trap serving a kitchen sink has a maximum trap arm of 3 feet 6 inches. If the isometric shows the vent connection at 4 feet from the trap, the vent is too far. The solution is to move the vent closer or increase the trap arm size to 2 inches (which allows 5 feet).
Bell traps (integral floor traps) are prohibited for fixtures other than floor drains (IPC Section 1002.1). If an isometric shows a bell trap under a sink, it is a code violation.
1.7 Cleanouts and Access
The isometric must show cleanouts at:
Cleanouts must be accessible. The isometric should show a cleanout extension to the finished floor or wall if the pipe is buried or concealed. A cleanout in a ceiling space is not accessible unless there is an access panel.
Field point: As the responsible master plumber, you must ensure that cleanouts are not covered by insulation or drywall before final inspection. The isometric is your checklist. A common violation is a cleanout at the base of a stack that is drawn but then concealed by a shower pan—the inspector will fail this.
1.8 Wet Venting and Horizontal Wet Vents
The isometric is the only way to verify a wet vent arrangement. IPC Section 908.1 allows a wet vent to serve a bathroom group, but the wet vent must be sized per Table 908.1.
Exam trap: A wet vent cannot serve fixtures other than a bathroom group (water closet, lavatory, bidet, bathtub, or shower). If the isometric shows a kitchen sink connected to a wet vent, it is a violation.
Horizontal wet vents (IPC Section 908.2) are permitted only for a bathroom group, and the vent must be a minimum of 2 inches. The isometric must show the lavatory drain serving as the wet vent for the water closet. The water closet must connect downstream of the lavatory.
1.9 Sizing the Building Drain and Sewer
The isometric typically shows the building drain leaving the building. The size is based on the total FU and the slope.
Field point: The master plumber must verify that the slope shown on the isometric is actually achievable in the field. A common error is a 4-inch drain drawn at ¼ inch per foot over a 100-foot run, but the elevation difference between the building and the sewer is only 18 inches. The required drop is 25 inches—the design is impossible. The isometric should show invert elevations at critical points.

Note: The IFGC (2018) is not directly relevant to plumbing isometrics, but you may see a combined drawing showing gas piping. Gas pipe sizing uses IFGC Chapter 12 (Tables 1215.2(1) through (4)). The isometric for gas is typically a separate drawing, but the master plumber must verify that gas piping does not run in the same trench as the sewer (IFGC Section 404.4) and that gas vents terminate properly (IFGC Chapter 8).
