What Is the Utah Master Plumber License?

In Utah, plumbing licensure runs through the Division of Occupational and Professional Licensing (DOPL) in the Department of Commerce, and DOPL contracts with a national testing vendor — Prov, Inc. — for the examinations, which candidates schedule through the vendor's Utah plumbing portal that DOPL links to from its exam page.

Utah issues five plumber license classifications: Apprentice, Journeyman, Master, Residential Journeyman and Residential Master. The Apprentice classification carries no exam requirement at all; the other four do, and the requirements are set out class by class on the DOPL exam page. This guide covers the Master Plumber class.

Two features distinguish the Utah path from the other states in this series. First, the master credential is examined in two parts: a written examination and a practical one, and the practical is a bench test with a materials list, not a multiple-choice paper. Second, DOPL states that preapproval for testing is not required and asks candidates not to submit their application for licensure until they have passed all required exams and met all other licensing requirements — so the sequence runs exam first, licence application second.

The Examinations the Master Class Requires

Utah's two official documents do not use the same words for the same thing, and this guide does not paper over that. Here is what each says.

• The DOPL exam page lists, under the Master Plumber classification, the Utah Master Plumber Law and Rule Exam and the Utah Plumber Practical Exam, with a note against the practical that it is not required if previously passed to obtain a Journeyman license. The same page names the Utah Plumber Written Exam for the Journeyman and Residential Journeyman classes.
• The vendor's candidate bulletin publishes a written plumbing examination with its own heading, format and content areas — 100 items, 4 hours, scored against 70%, thirteen areas — as summarised in this guide.

Whether the examination DOPL names for the Master class and the written examination the bulletin publishes are the same paper under two names, or two different papers, is exactly the kind of question a guide should not settle by assumption. Confirm it with DOPL, and schedule whichever examination the Division names for your class. What is not in doubt is the structure of the path: a written examination, a practical examination of two projects scored at 37 points each, and a licence application filed only after all required exams are passed.

Written Exam Format: 100 Items, 4 Hours, 70%

An honesty note that belongs at the top of the page rather than in a footnote: the Utah candidate bulletin is the one document this series could not obtain. The vendor's domain refuses automated access — a plain request and a browser-identical request both answer HTTP 403 — and there is no archived snapshot of the document to fall back on. First, confirm the figures against the bulletin you receive when you schedule. Official Content Outline: The Thirteen Areas of the Written Exam

The bulletin publishes the written examination area by area. The thirteen content areas and their item counts are:

Read the weights as a study plan. Drain, Waste, and Vent alone is 20 items — a fifth of the examination — and with Water Supply (15) and Indirect & Special Waste (10) the drainage side of the trade is 45 items. Plumbing Math (9) and Plumbing Safety (9) come next and are equal in weight, which is worth noticing: safety is not a garnish on this examination, it is as big as the calculations. Then a long tail — Pipe and Fittings (7), Fuel Gas (6), Plumbing Fixtures (6), Hydronics (5), Water Heaters (5) and three small areas of 3, 3 and 2 — that still adds up to 39 items. A candidate who studies only the two headline areas leaves nearly half the paper untouched.

The Practical Examination: Two Projects, 37 Points Each

Utah's master path is not written-only. The practical examination is two projects in 2.5 hours, scored as a plastic assembly worth 37 points and a copper assembly worth 37 points, and one of the two projects involves a rolling offset. Candidates bring their own tools and their own materials. On the DOPL exam page the practical is listed for the Master class with the note that it is not required where it was already passed to obtain a journeyman license.

That structure tells you how to prepare for it. A rolling offset is arithmetic plus layout plus execution — the maths you can rehearse in a chair, the layout and the joint quality you cannot. The plastic and copper assemblies are each worth the same 37 points, so a candidate who is comfortable only with one material is carrying half a practical. And because you supply the tools and the materials, the preparation is also logistics: know what the bulletin asks you to bring, and bring it.

Eligibility, the Code Edition, and What Comes After

• Eligibility for the Master class (DOPL): an Associate in Applied Science degree plus 2,000 hours of supervisory plumbing experience as a licensed journeyman plumber; or 4,000 hours of plumbing experience and 4,000 hours of supervisory plumbing experience as a licensed journeyman plumber.
• Preapproval: not required to test. DOPL also asks candidates not to submit their application for licensure until they have passed all required exams and met all other licensing requirements.
• Code edition: Utah Code 15A-2-103 adopts the 2024 edition of the International Plumbing Code, with the relevant sections effective 1 July 2026. Utah moved to the IPC 2024 — not the 2021 edition — which is why this platform serves the Utah master plumber exam on the IPC 2024 cycle.
• Support and contacts: DOPL publishes the Division's licensing exam resources, a contact address for questions, and a candidate information bulletin link on its plumbing exam page. Use them: for Utah, the Division is the authority on which examinations your class requires and on the reference rule.

How to Prepare

1. Get the bulletin from DOPL or the vendor, and read it first. This guide is honest that the document could not be read for it. The bulletin is where the reference rule lives — what you may bring into the examination — and that rule changes how you study more than any other single fact on this page.
2. Confirm which examinations your class requires. The DOPL page and the bulletin name the written examination differently. Settle it with DOPL before you pay for a seat.
3. Drill the thirteen areas at their published weights. DWV (20), Water Supply (15) and Indirect & Special Waste (10) lead; Plumbing Math and Plumbing Safety are equal at 9. Practice questions should mirror those weights.
4. Do not treat safety as filler. Nine safety items is as much as the entire calculations area; the code chapters behind it deserve a real study block.
5. Prepare the practical at the bench. Rehearse a plastic assembly and a copper assembly against the clock, work a rolling offset until the layout is automatic, and assemble the tool and material kit the bulletin requires.
